Weer grote bank in VS omgevallen

Economic Meltdown part 1/4

Coast to Coast AM Sept 26th 2009

In the first hour, financial advisor Joe Meyer provided an update on the current (and future) economic meltdown. Meyer believes the rally in the stock market will end soon. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, which closed at 9665 on Friday, will go back down to 6470, he said. If that number gets violated, Meyer warned, the next stop could be 4123 and possibly even 2450 as a final panic bottom.

He predicted a second wave of home mortgage defaults when rates reset in 2010 and 2011. Meyer said the next bubble to burst will be commercial real estate, which he anticipates will crash harder than the residential market. A projected 125,000 retail stores are expected to close in 2009 alone, he added, leading to even more bank defaults and further job losses.

Meyer pointed out that 10 states have unemployment rates above 10%, but thinks the true number is much higher, around 16-17%. He suggested setting up programs to put people to work in the public works sector, building and improving roads, bridges, ports, and other infrastructure. Meyer also talked about the end of the U.S. Dollar as a world reserve currency, the commodities bull market, and his recommendation that people buy precious metals, such as silver.

Government auditor tells all...

"I think we may be in a far more dangerous place today than we were a year ago," he said.

Neil Barofsky is the man who tracks the historic bailout known as the Troubled Asset Relief Program or TARP. Named in December, the 39-year-old special inspector general monitors a dozen separate bailout-related programs, which now account for nearly $3 trillion in financial commitments. Barofsky has subpoena power and, as a former federal prosecutor who successfully pursued white-collar crime, he has wasted no time in demanding details from institutions rescued by TARP. From a floor of office on L Street, the man known as SIGTARP has launched about two dozen investigations. In an audit released in July, Barofsky made clear that he was intent on demanding transparency from all quarters - including the U.S. Treasury. His next audit is due in October. In a half-hour interview with the Investigative Fund, Barofsky lays out the breadth of his work and is blunt in his assessment about whether the financial system, now with fewer and bigger banks, is yet safe. "I think we may be in a far more dangerous place today than we were a year ago," he said.

'1,5% groei in Europa tot 2020'
Jean-Claude Juncker

FDIC Discloses Deposit Insurance Fund Is Now Negative.

In an unprecedented disclosure, the FDIC has highlighted that it expects the DIF reserve ratio to be negative as of September 30. As there are a whopping 48 hours before that deadline, one can safely assume that the DIF is now well into negative territory: as of today depositors have no insurance courtesy of a banking system that has leeched out all the capital of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. Let's pray there is no run on the bank soon.

The Bailout That's Failing.

The federal rescue may have saved the banking sector, but it hasn't fixed the housing market.

The bad news? While the government has pacified the commercial finance, savings, and plain-vanilla banking sectors, it's sending reinforcements into the vast, restive region where the trouble began: housing.
