TOKYO (MarketWatch) -- Rare earth elements are a mere mention in school textbooks, but as their uses in consumer goods continue to grow with the invention of new high-tech gadgets -- and as China tightens control of the market -- they've been flagging heavy interest among commodities investors.

"This hot commodity play has some room to run still," said Brent Cook, author of the investment letter Exploration Insights.

Rare earths, comprised of about 17 elements, serve as vital components in everything from lasers and optical fibers to petroleum refining, automotive parts, computer monitors, lighting and televisions.

Rare earths are vital, and China owns them all

Myra P. Saefong, MarketWatch
TOKYO (MarketWatch) -- Rare earths may not be on most investors' radars, but they are certainly in almost any high-tech item they use -- and in the world of rare earths, China is king.

The U.S. Geological Survey recognizes 17 different rare earths, materials with science-fictionesque names like lanthanum and gadolinium. They are used in everything: glass polishing and ceramics, automotive catalytic converters, computer monitors, lighting, televisions and pharmaceuticals.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>............

Zo juist binnengekomen bericht.....................van Big Red Diamond..

Big Red Stakes Rare Earth Claims in Quebec

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Sept. 25, 2009)
Big Red Diamond Corporation ("Big Red") (TSX VENTURE:DIA) is pleased to announce that it has acquired, by map staking, a 100% interest in 88 claims covering a surface area of approximately 4,712 hectares which are located 52 kilometres North West of Sept-Iles Quebec.

Big Red's newly staked property surrounds a showing discovered by Soquem in 1976 where historic trenching assays revealed 1.08% Yttrium (Y), 0.455% Lanthanum (La), 2.63% Niobium (Nb2O5), 0.21% Tantalum (Ta2O5), 7.62% Zirconium (Zr) and 0.025% Thorium (ThO2). The property's 200 metres proximity from the main showing indicates a strong potential for a discovery of rare earth elements on Big Red's under-explored property.

Lynas to Sell Shares After China Stake Deal Blocked

Sept. 29 (Bloomberg) -- Lynas Corp., an Australian rare earths producer, plans to sell A$450 million ($393 million) of shares to complete a project after Australia blocked China Non- Ferrous Metal Mining (Group) Co. from buying a majority stake.

The shares will be sold at 45 cents each to institutions and individual investors, the Sydney-based company said today in a statement. That’s 50 percent less than the last closing price.

Australia’s Foreign Investment Review Board on Sept. 24 ordered China Non-Ferrous to limit its stake in Lynas to less than 50 percent. China accounts for more than 90 percent of global output of rare earths, used in iPod music players, liquid crystal displays, hybrid cars and wind turbines.

Jim Jubak just published a very useful survey course on Rare Earth Element investment opportunities. The good news is that he nails the facts. The bad news is that if he’s writing about REE’s, then the knowledge of this unusual investment niche is no longer very rare.

RES.V.......

Light REE's,..

Rare Element Resources' Bear Lodge, Wyoming property contains the "light" REEs (lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, samarium, europium, and gadolinium).

Four of these, cerium, lanthanum, neodymium, and praseodymium, listed in decreasing abundance, make up the majority of the Bear Lodge distribution, and neodymium and praseodymium are especially valuable.

Avalon,AVL.V........
voor als u voorkeur heeft voor Heavy REE's

Avalon Rare Metals Inc. is a mineral exploration and development company focused on rare metals deposits in Canada.

Its flagship project, the 100%-owned Nechalacho Deposit, Thor Lake, NWT, is emerging as one of the largest undeveloped rare earth elements resources in the world. Its exceptional enrichment in the more valuable "heavy" rare earth elements, which are key to enabling advances in green energy technology and other growing high-tech applications, is one of the few potential sources of these critical elements outside of China, currently the source of 95% of world supply. Avalon is well funded, has no debt and its work programs are progressing steadily. Social responsibility and environmental stewardship are corporate cornerstones.

Torch River Resources Ltd.: Mount Copeland Rare Earth Bearing Mineralization
CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Nov. 11, 2009) - Torch River Resources Ltd. ("Torch" or the "Corporation") (TSX VENTURE:TCR) (PINK SHEETS:TORVF) (FRANKFURT:WNF) is pleased to announce that additional geochemical analysis of 2008 core for rare earth elements (REE's) will be carried out on the Mount Copeland Molybdenum Project. A total of 41 samples (57.52 meters total interval length) from 9 drill holes will be analyzed for rare earth elements. These samples were analyzed for Ba, K, P, Sr & Mn (in 2008). Based on anomalous values in these indicator elements, a total of 41 samples, ranging from 0.5-2.38 meters interval length, are being analyzed for rare earth elements.

The rare earths consist of 15 elements; lanthanum (La), cerium (Ce), praseodymium (Pr), neodymium (Nd), promethium (Pm), samarium(Sm), europium (Eu), gadolinium (Gd), terbium (Tb), dysprosium (Dy), holmium (Ho), erbium (Er), thulium (Tm), ytterbium (Yb) and lutetium (Lu). All of the rare earths except promethium(Pm) occur naturally along with scandium (Sc) and yttrium (Y) which are not rare earths but are normally found in the same ore deposits. Rare earths are essential for such familiar technologies as cell phones and computer screens, and are also found in many emerging technologies, including alternate energy sources such as hybrid cars and rechargeable batteries. Many defense applications, including missile guidance systems, mine detection, anti-missile defense and communications systems, also require rare earth elements.

More news after the weeknd:)
