Rare earth prices soar as China stocks up

Prices of some rare earth metals have doubled in just three weeks amid heavy stockpiling in China that has raised fears over global supplies.

apan and the US, the world’s biggest importers of rare earths, have repeatedly voiced concerns to China, while complaints from industrial users of rare earths have been growing. Last year, China cut their exports by 40 per cent and temporarily banned exports to Japan during a political dispute.

One European trader said: “It’s a bubble, it’s got to be, there is no end use that can stand that price,” of rare earths.

Dacha Sells 86,000 Kilograms of Yttrium Oxide
TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 9, 2011) - Dacha Strategic Metals Inc. ("Dacha" or the "Company") (TSX VENTURE:DSM) announced today that it has sold 86,000 kilograms ("kgs") of Yttrium Oxide from its domestic supply in Shanghai at a price of 255 Rmb per kg (including VAT) for gross proceeds of 21,930,000 Rmb (approximately US$3.4 million). Based on the original purchase price of 58 Rmb per kg and a total gross purchase price of 4,988,000 Rmb, the Company realized a pre-tax gain of 16,942,000 Rmb (approximately US$2.6 million).

PEKING (AFN) - China heeft het bezoek van eurocommissaris Karel de Gucht van Handel donderdag aangegrepen om de exportquota voor zeldzame aardmetalen meer dan te verdubbelen naar 30.184 ton.

Het nieuwe exportquotum komt ruim een week nadat de Wereldhandelsorganisatie (WTO) Chinese exportbeperkingen op een reeks andere grondstoffen illegaal had verklaard. De Gucht had China toen opgeroepen ,,de vrije en en eerlijk toegang tot voorraden zeldzame aardmetalen te garanderen''.

In de eerste helft van dit jaar had China de exportquota nog met 35 procent verlaagd, waardoor voor westerse industrieën een tekort aan de metalen dreigde. In 2010 gaf China 30.258 ton vrij voor de export. De metalen worden onder meer gebruikt in motoren voor elektrische auto's, windturbines en zonnecellen.

Rare-earths moves

WITH all fads, you get companies mining the market rather than the ground.

That phase appears to be over so far as rare earths are concerned and now investors will be looking for runs on the board.

So it is significant that Northern Minerals (NTU) has released its first drill results from the Browns Range project in Western Australia, showing high grades, including 5m at 3.49 per cent total rare-earths oxides with 0.32 per cent dysprosium.

NTU reminds us that dysprosium out of China, which cost $US400/kg at the beginning of this year, now commands $US2840/kg.

Terbium sold for $US900/kg in April, $US3000/kg in June and is $US4510/kg now.
