The Heritage Foundation trumpeted coal’s “Colossal Comeback” in 2017, and a Wall Street Journal reporter in 2018 wrote of its global “resilience.” Industry executives three years ago credited the newly-elected Trump administration with paving the way for fresh investments in new mines. The exuberance trickled down to state governments, where coal-state governors and legislators enthused as recently as last year about coal’s nascent rebound.

That noise has now largely died down.

Coal-fired power plants continued to close, including the 2,225-megawatt (MW) Navajo Generating Station in Arizona and the 2,700MW Bruce Mansfield station in Pennsylvania. Even exports, touted by many in the industry as an option for future growth, are falling, down 17 percent through the end of the third quarter, and new coal export projects remain a dim hope, weighed down by local opposition and, more important, low prices. While coal struggled throughout 2019, renewable power generation continued its ascent, for the first time surpassing coal (see the chart here), a trend led by new wind and solar installations, while cheaper-to-operate gas-fired power plants continued to take market share from coal.

Trump administration plans to announce 100-mile mark on border wall construction

Trump administration officials plan to announce Friday that they have completed 100 miles of new barriers along the border with Mexico, but their benchmark underscores how far construction crews still have to go to fulfill the president’s pledge to finish 450 miles by the end of 2020.

Chad Wolf, the acting secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, is traveling to Yuma, Ariz., to make the announcement, according to DHS officials. Senior border officials and U.S. Sen. Martha McSally, (R-Ariz.), who is facing a tough reelection bid and has been trailing in polls, are expected to join Wolf there.

Nearly all of the 100 miles of new fencing completed thus far is labeled “replacement barrier” by CBP, but the White House has asked the agency to stop using that term because it sounds like less of an accomplishment.

The 2020 budget approved by Congress last month included an additional $1.4 billion for border barrier construction. That is the same funding level Democrats agreed to last year but far less than the $5 billion the White House was seeking.

Kushner and other administration officials have discussed the possibility of diverting billions of dollars from military budgets again this year, and the ruling by the appeals court opens a path for the White House to take that course.

Ik herinner me het nog precies, was bij een Amerikaanse vriend van me, samen kijken. Gedeelde vreugd is dubbele vreugd. Toen we afspraken was het helegaar niet duidelijk dat we een feestje kregen, met 95% zekerheid winst voor Hillary.

Donald Trump moved to dismiss E. Jean Carroll’s lawsuit against him on the supposed ground that the State of New York doesn’t have personal jurisdiction over him. Normally a party submits a sworn affidavit to support such a motion, but Trump was too afraid to do that.

So the judge made short work of his motion, saying “notably, there is not even a tweet, much less an affidavit by Trump in support of his motion.” And she added that “there is no basis for a stay of discovery ... in this case.”

MOTION DENIED.

Donald Trump can face a lawsuit in New York because his residency at the White House “is not permanent” and his tax returns would prove it, according to an advice columnist suing the president for denying he raped her two decades ago.

E. Jean Carroll, who filed a defamation suit against Trump in November, made the argument in a Monday court filing responding to the president’s request to have the case dismissed on the grounds that New York courts lack jurisdiction. Carroll’s lawyers said Trump hadn’t met the standard under New York law for formally changing his residence to Washington.

Carroll went public with her rape claim in a June magazine article, alleging Trump assaulted her in a dressing room in a Manhattan department store in the mid-1990s. Trump has repeatedly denied the allegation and called her a liar seeking to promote her career.

The filing raised the prospect Carroll would seek Trump’s taxes to prove New York was his primary home during the relevant time period. The president has aggressively fought against any effort, including by Congress, to gain access to his taxes.

“Many of the documents establishing those facts -- such as Trump’s latest New York State tax return -- are within Trump’s ‘exclusive control,’” the filing says.

Her filing said Trump’s claim about jurisdiction is an attempt to delay a court-ordered exchange of evidence, which the president last week asked to put off until the residency fight is decided. Carroll last month won court approval to depose Trump by April 6.
