One Hundred Dead Choppers: Russia’s Helicopter Losses

Russia has had 100 helicopters neutralized during its war on Ukraine, including 10 since the start of the counteroffensive and 40 percent of its prized Ka-52 Kamaz Alligator attack helicopters.

Russia has now lost 100 helicopters since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, including 10 over the course of Kyiv’s summer offensive, according to data collected by an independent intelligence and monitoring organization.

In its most recent website update, Oryx reports that the Russian military has now had 100 helicopters neutralized since February 2022 including 87 destroyed, 12 damaged and one captured by Ukrainian forces.

Ten Russian helicopters have been downed since the beginning of June when Ukraine ramped up counteroffensive activity on several sections of the 1,000-kilometer-long front.

Of the 100 overall Russian helicopter losses, the breakdown by type, according to Oryx, is as follows:

· 20 Mi-8 transport helicopters;

· 5 Mi-8 electronic warfare helicopters;

· 4 Mi-24P attack helicopters;

· 3 Mi-24V attack helicopters;

· 10 Mi-35M attack helicopters;

· 13 Mi-28 attack helicopters;

· 38 Ka-52 “Alligator” attack helicopters;

· 7 of unknown type.

Oryx, a Dutch open-source monitor, only records a piece of military equipment as a loss if there is video or photo evidence and a geolocation of the loss.

Russia’s true losses are likely to be higher.

The UK is picking apart Russian military equipment captured in Ukraine.

Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, Britain’s military chief, shared this in a comment to Sky News.

Thus, the British servicemen want to learn more about the specifications and other parameters of Russian military equipment.

Meanwhile, British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace has described Ukraine as a “battle laboratory” for Ukrainian forces and their Western allies as they experiment with new weapons and technology to fight the Russian invaders.

Admiral Radakin noted that the war in Ukraine had been a “wake-up call” for the UK. According to him, it demands the accelerated acquisition of military equipment and a “more aggressive” policy for Britain with regard to its own security.

Asked about what the UK was learning from examining captured Russian military vehicles from Ukraine, Admiral Radakin said:

“It’s really important because we’re in a club of nations that when we get hold of Russian kit or other nations’ kit that might be a danger to us in the future, we share that knowledge.”

“We also have the scientists that unpick the detail that another nation might have to a really forensic level, and that helps us to understand: how does their equipment work? How can we defeat it? How can we have even better armor? How can we disrupt their communications? How can we ensure that we can penetrate their defenses? And that’s what we do,” said Radakin.

Since the beginning of the full-scale war with Russia, Ukrainian troops have captured hundreds of units of the invader’s military equipment. It became a valuable asset for the Armed Forces of Ukraine brigades.

Previously, specialists in Ukraine examined the Russian Lancet kamikaze drone.

Russia is withholding meds, including insulin, from Ukrainians in occupied territories if they refuse to get a Russian passport

Russian forces are denying basic medical care to Ukrainians in an occupied region who refuse to get Russian passports, Ukrainian officials said on Sunday.

Subsidized insulin and thyroid hormone medications are among the drugs being withheld in the southern Ukrainian region of Zaporizhzhia, which Russia has largely occupied since last year, according to Ukraine's National Resistance Center.

Ukrainians are entitled to free or discounted medicines, the center said.

The Kremlin and Russia's Ministry of Defense did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the claim, which Insider was unable to independently verify.

Last June, Russian passports were handed out in Melitopol and Kherson, which were among the first cities to be captured in Russia's full-scale invasion.

Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs called the move "a gross violation of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity."

Rusland ontbindt coördinatiecentrum voor graanakkoord in Istanbul
Rusland heft het coördinatiecentrum op dat toezag op de uitvoering van het graanakkoord. Dat heeft de Russische minister van Buitenlandse Zaken, Sergej Lavrov, aan zijn Turkse ambtgenoot Hakan Fidan laten weten. Het centrum bevond zich in Istanbul. Het Kremlin beschuldigt Oekraïne ervan de graancorridor voor militaire doeleinden te hebben gebruikt, maar levert daarvoor geen bewijzen aan.

Gisterochtend meldde het Kremlin al dat het weigerde in te stemmen met een verlenging van de overeenkomst die Rusland en Oekraïne vorig jaar sloten. Daarmee kwam er een voorlopig einde aan de Oekraïense graanexport via de Zwarte Zee. Enkel wanneer het Westen voldoet aan de door Rusland gestelde eisen voor de eigen graanexport, wil de Russische regering weer meewerken.

De Oekraïense president Volodymyr Zelensky probeert de graanexport zonder Russische toestemming voort te zetten, maar Rusland waarschuwt dat de veiligheid van de graanschepen dan niet is gewaarborgd. "Zonder gepaste veiligheidsgaranties zijn er bepaalde risico’s", aldus Kremlinwoordvoerder Dmitri Peskov. "Als iets zonder Rusland op poten wordt gezet, moet rekening gehouden worden met die risico’s."

Russia’s parliament on Tuesday extended the eligibility for military call-up by at least five years – in the case of the highest-ranking officers, up to the age of 70.

Last September, Russia announced its first mobilisation since the second world war, calling up more than 300,000 former soldiers in an often-chaotic emergency draft to support its war in Ukraine, a campaign that has been much longer and more attritional than Moscow had expected, and shows no sign of ending.

It is already raising the upper age limit for men to be called up for compulsory military service to 30 from 27, and has made it much harder for young men to avoid the draft by dodging recruiters handing out call-up papers.

The law passed on Tuesday allows men who have completed their compulsory service without any further commitment to be mobilised up to the age of 40, 50 or 55, depending on their category, the State Duma or lower house of parliament said on its website. In all cases the age limit was raised by five years.

The new law means that those from this reserve with the highest ranks can now be called back into service up to the age of 70 rather than 65, other senior ranks up to 65, junior officers up to 60 – and all others up to the age of 55 rather than 45.

Defence minister Sergei Shoigu has said he plans to increase the basic number of combat personnel in service – professional contract soldiers and conscripts – to 1.5 million from 1.15 million.

Arresting Russia’s President Vladimir Putin would amount to a declaration of war on Russia, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa wrote in court papers released on Tuesday as the country wrangles over hosting the Russian leader.

Putin has been invited to a BRICS summit in Johannesburg next month but is the target of an international criminal court arrest warrant – a provision that Pretoria as an ICC member would be expected to implement were he to attend, AFP reports.

South Africa’s diplomatic dilemma is playing out in court, where the leading opposition party, the Democratic Alliance (DA), is trying to force the government’s hand and ensure the Kremlin leader is held and handed over to the ICC if he steps foot in the country.

But in a responding affidavit, described the DA’s application as “irresponsible” and said national security was at stake.

Ramaphosa said:
"Russia has made it clear that arresting its sitting President would be a declaration of war.
It would be inconsistent with our constitution to risk engaging in war with Russia."

Signed in June and initially marked as “confidential”, Ramaphosa’s affidavit was published on Tuesday, after the court ruled related papers be made public.

De oorlog in Syrië is niet door Rusland begonnen, maar Rusland heeft - op verzoek van de Syrische overheid - wel deelgenomen aan de oorlog. Daarbij heeft Rusland volgens Westerse schattingen de helft van het aantal burgerslachtoffers gemaakt dat de door het Westen geleide coalitië in de campagne in Syrië (en Irak bij deze campagne) heeft gemaakt. Verder heb ik geen betrouwbare bron gezien waarin wordt beweerd dat Rusland die oorlog is begonnen, of heeft bijgedragen aan het begin van die oorlog. (Je kunt wat betreft het laatste niet hetzelfde zeggen over de VS.)

Als je het hebt over Hitler, dan denk ik o.a. aan de Holocaust. 6 miljoen Joden die zijn vermoord. Jij legt kennelijk de nadruk op het aanvallen van buurlanden en een van de redenen die daarbij is opgevoerd. Het is in die zin niet dat je ongelijk hebt. Er zijn inderdaad overeenkomsten.
