New leaked documents show Reuters’ and the BBC’s involvement in covert UK FCO programs to effect “attitudinal change” and “weaken the Russian state’s influence,” alongside intel contractors and Bellingcat.

The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) have sponsored Reuters and the BBC to conduct a series of covert programs aimed at promoting regime change inside Russia and undermining its government across Eastern Europe and Central Asia, according to a series of leaked documents. The leaked materials show the Thomson Reuters Foundation and BBC Media Action participating in a covert information warfare campaign aimed at countering Russia. Working through a shadowy department within the UK FCO known as the Counter Disinformation & Media Development (CDMD), the media organizations operated alongside a collection of intelligence contractors in a secret entity known simply as “the Consortium.”

Through training programs of Russian journalists overseen by Reuters, the British Foreign Office sought to produce an “attitudinal change in the participants,” promoting a “positive impact” on their “perception of the UK.”

“These revelations show that when MPs were railing about Russia, British agents were using the BBC and Reuters to deploy precisely the same tactics that politicians and media commentators were accusing Russia of using,”

Reuters and the BBC solicited multimillion-dollar contracts to advance the British state’s interventionist aims, promising to cultivate Russian journalists through FCO-funded tours and training sessions, establish influence networks in and around Russia, and promote pro-NATO narratives in Russian-speaking regions.

In several proposals to the British Foreign Office, Reuters boasted of a global influence network of 15,000 journalists and staff, including 400 inside Russia.

Biden hoopte op een vlotte terugkeer in de Iran-deal.
In een toespraak van juli 2019 was Biden duidelijk over wat hij met Iran wilde bereiken als hij president zou worden.

"Als Teheran de overeenkomst weer nakomt, zou ik me weer bij de overeenkomst voegen en met onze bondgenoten samenwerken om deze te versterken en uit te breiden, terwijl ik me effectiever zou opstellen tegen de andere destabiliserende activiteiten van Iran", vertelde hij een menigte aan de City University in New York.

In zijn ambtsperiode bleef het team van Biden die lijn vasthouden: om de VS opnieuw te laten toetreden tot de overeenkomst, moest Iran eerst weer voldoen aan de beperkingen van het pact voor zijn nucleaire ontwikkeling. Simpel gezegd, Teheran zou zijn niveaus van uraniumverrijking moeten verminderen tot de limieten die zijn gespecificeerd in de deal met Iran voordat Amerika eventuele sancties tegen het land zou opheffen.

Iran toonde echter minder bereidheid om gesprekken aan te gaan. Teheran zei dat de VS sancties moesten opheffen voordat ze de terugkeer van Amerika tot het pact zouden bespreken. En waarschijnlijk in een poging om de druk op de VS te vergroten, vuurden Iraanse bondgenoten raketten af ??op anti-ISIS-coalitietroepen buiten Erbil, Irak - waarbij een Filipijnse aannemer werd gedood en Amerikaanse troepen gewond raakten - en in de buurt van de Amerikaanse ambassade in Bagdad.

Dat bracht Biden ertoe om twee gevechtsvliegtuigen te sturen om bommen te laten vallen op negen faciliteiten in Oost-Syrië die deze militanten gebruikten om wapens te smokkelen.

De Iran-deal is complexe materie. Maar het akkoord werd opgezegd door Donald J Trump. Ook de sancties erna werden ingezet door Donald J Trump. Ik vind het derhalve begrijpelijk dat Iran vraagt om terug te keren naar de situatie pre-Trump.

En vanaf daar weer het overleg op te pakken. Wat mij betreft heeft alias @ hirshi hierboven dan ook de verkeerde conclusie getrokken -zoals wel vaker-.

US announces $125 million in military aid for Ukraine

The package comes with two Mark VI patrol boats produced by SAFE Boats International, bringing Ukraine’s fleet up to eight of the vessels.

The package also includes “capabilities to enhance the lethality, command and control, and situational awareness of Ukraine’s forces through the provision of additional counter-artillery radars and tactical equipment; continued support for a satellite imagery and analysis capability; and equipment to support military medical treatment and combat evacuation procedures,” per a Pentagon statement.

There is still $150 million in fiscal 2021 Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative funding appropriated by Congress, but that is gated off until the Defense and State departments jointly certify there has been “sufficient progress” made by Kyiv on military reform efforts.

“The [Defense] Department encourages Ukraine to continue to enact reforms that strengthen civilian control of the military, promote increased transparency and accountability in defense industry and procurement, and modernize its defense sector in other key areas in line with NATO principles and standards,” the department said in a statement.

The question of what arms and military aid the U.S. can give to Ukraine has been a touchy subject since the Russian annexation of Crimea in 2014. The Obama administration hesitated to send lethal weapons, most notably Javelin anti-tank weapons, despite a push from members of Congress. The Trump administration later OK’d the sale of Javelins as well as further aid.

That sale would become a political flashpoint and central to the first impeachment trial of President Donald Trump.

Whether more Javelins may be included in the future is unclear, but Oleksandr Danylyuk, chairman of the Ukrainian Center for Defense Reform, said in a Feb. 18 interview that the weapons are no longer needed on the front lines because of how the conflict has shifted.

“Right now there is no need for [Javelins at the front] because despite that, we have clashes almost each day, and unfortunately we have casualties each day. They are mostly casualties inflicted by Russian [Federal Security Service] and GRU [intelligence agency] snipers — the main attacking force for the last period of conflicts,” Danylyuk said.

“They are not using tanks or any armored vehicles, not even much artillery in the last couple of months. It’s been snipers, which is why we definitely do not need any Javelins or Ukrainian anti-tank missiles to confront them.”

Over Merrick Garland's nominatie zal binnenkort door de volle Senaat gestemd worden over zijn aanstelling.

Volgens mij is dit hetzelfde, alleen in het geval van een Republican ongepast en slecht, bij een Democrat, ongepast maar toelaatbaar.
