GE Power launches 1,000MW Iraq power plant project

GE Power, a global energy leader, has joined forces with Iraqi Ministry of Electricity for the launch of Baghdad West North Substation that can connect up to 1,000 megawatts to the national grid and help decrease bottlenecks besides increasing the hours of available power. Underlining their joint commitment to support the development of Iraq’s power infrastructure, the Iraqi ministry and GE Power’s Grid Solutions business celebrated the energisation of the Baghdad West North substation.

The event was attended by Prime Minister of Iraq, Adil Abdul Mahdi, senior officials of the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity including Minister Luay Al Khatteeb, various government entities, GE and other organizations.

GE’s scope for work in the turnkey 400/132/11 kilovolt gas insulated substation project included the design, equipment manufacturing, site delivery, erection, testing and commissioning, and training of personnel.

The project’s construction, erection, commissioning, and testing was completed by GE Iraqi engineers in collaboration with local Iraqi subcontractors,, said the company in a statement.

The facility can feed 132 kV substations at Kadhmiya, Al Shualla and Al Sabbeaat, as well as another five substations that are planned to be developed in the future and helps connect power from the Basmaya Power Plant, Taji Gas Power Plant and mobile gas power plants to the national grid.

Located about 35km away from the city, the substation can help connect up to 1,000 megawatts (MW) to the national grid, decreasing bottlenecks and increasing the hours of available power.

Minister of Electricity Luay Al Khatteeb said that "The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity is seeking to provide reliable, uninterrupted power across the country. The opening of the Baghdad West North substation reflects our efforts to achieve this goal. The substation will play a critical role in helping to deliver much-needed power, especially in the upcoming summer months."

With the strict guidelines from the Union Ministry of Environment and Forest, the thermal power plants should take steps for cent per cent utilisation of the fly ash. During the recent times, the utilisation of the fly ash increased in various sectors. About 8,000 tonnes of fly ash being generated by the SSTPP, which is a 2,000 MW thermal power plant, located in Parawada in the district. As part of cent per cent utilisation of fly ash, the management is offering the ash to brick industries, cement factories and some other sectors.

However, the NHAI is also using the ash for laying highways in the country. The NHAI, is presently constructing six-lane highway from Anandapuram to Ranasthalam in Srikakulam district. The NHAI is using about 7,000 mt fly ash of SSTPP for its highway construction. Meanwhile, over 300 fly ash brick companies registered with SSTPP also taking ash.

China powers up renewable energy by 12 pct in 2018

South China Morning Post China’s renewable power capacity rose 12 per cent in 2018 compared to a year earlier, official data showed that, with the country still rolling out new projects despite transmission capacity concerns and a growing subsidy payment backlog.

China has been aggressively promoting renewable power as part of an “energy revolution” aimed at easing its dependence on coal, a major source of pollution and climate-warming greenhouse gas emissions.

National Energy Administration said that total capacity including hydro and biomass as well as solar and wind rose to 728 gigawatts by the end of last year. That amounted to 38.3 per cent of China’s total installed power capacity, up 1.7 percentage points on the year and around 7 percentage points higher than at the end of 2015.

China hooked up another 20.59GW of new wind power capacity to its grid in 2018, the NEA said. New solar capacity reached 44.3GW, slightly higher than a figure given by an industry association earlier this month, but still down compared to 2017 following a decision to slash subsidies.

China also completed another 8.54GW of hydropower capacity, mostly in the nation’s southwest, bringing total hydropower to 352GW by the year’s end.

China has tried to change the “rhythm” of renewable power construction to give grid operators time to raise transmission capacity and ensure clean electricity generation is not wasted.

Mr Li Chuangjun, deputy head of the NEA’s new energy section, said overall rates of waste in the wind power sector had fallen to 7 per cent last year, down 5 percentage points on the year.

The major wind generation regions of Xinjiang and Gansu in the far northwest, however, still failed to get around a fifth of potential wind power onto the grid over the period.

China’s “energy revolution” has also involved the installation of new emissions control technology at its coal-fired power plants, still the dominant form of energy in China.

Around 810GW, or 80 per cent, of China’s coal-fired capacity was employing “ultra-low emission” technology by the end of 2018, according to the transcript of a speech by Environment Minister Li Ganjie published on Monday.

China power capacity seen rising 110 GW in 2019

Reuters reported that China is expected to put another 110 gigawatts of new power generation into operation in 2019, more than the entire capacity of the United Kingdom, with over half consisting of clean energy sources like solar, an industry group said late on Tuesday.

Despite promises to "decouple" economic growth and energy consumption, China's total power capacity has continued to surge. The country put 120 GW into operation last year after connecting a record 133.7 GW of new capacity in 2017, according to data from the China Electricity Council.

But it has steadily raised the share of clean energy sources in the total, and is expected to put another 62 GW of non-fossil fuel power into operation during 2019, CEC said in its annual report.

The group, which represents China's power generating firms, said the country's total installed capacity was expected to break the 2,000 GW barrier by the end of this year, rising around 5 percent from the end of 2018.

GE to combine renewable and grid assets into single unit

Reuters reported that General Electric would consolidate its renewable and grid assets into a single unit, seeking to tap into the growing global demand for clean energy generation. The plan is to combine GE's grid solutions and hybrid renewables, including solar and storage systems, into the GE renewable energy business, complementing the company's existing onshore wind, offshore wind and hydro offerings.

This is GE's first major move after its third-quarter earnings in October when the US Securities and Exchange Commission and Department of Justice had expanded probe to include the $22-billion writedown of goodwill from its power division.

GE last year announced plans to focus on jet engines, power plants and renewable energy, by disposing of its healthcare and Baker Hughes units, along with other ongoing restructuring programs.

GE's renewable energy contributed about 9 per cent of the company's total industrial segment revenues in 2017, prior to this integration.

The new renewable energy unit will be part of GE's energy related portfolio, which also includes the newly created gas power business and GE's power unit, which produces power generation equipment.
