UK-based hydrogen powered commercial vehicle innovator Hydrogen Vehicle Systems hasrevealed that the consortium it leads, Hub2Hub, has been awarded GBP 6.6 million to develop and deliver a revolutionary, world-first, autonomous zero-emission HGV for the UK market. Accelerating towards the next generation of transportation and logistics, the Hub2Hub consortium will create a self-driving heavy goods tractor unit, which will begin vehicles trials in 2024, with major UK retailer, ASDA, supporting on end user needs as strategic partners. It’s hoped that the cost savings an autonomous lorry could provide will speed up the adoption of zero-emissions vehicles by the freight sector, reducing the industry’s contribution to climate change.

The GBP 12 million venture has been selected by the Centre for Connected Autonomous Vehicles (as a recipient for its joint industry and government-funded project with the aim of showcasing the potential of autonomy in the transportation sector with unprecedented levels of efficiency, safety and operational cost savings for logistics operators, as well as providing new employment opportunities.

HVS, which laid out its plans to disrupt the haulage industry by revealing its game-changing hydrogen- electric powertrain technology demonstrator in November 2022, will receive £3.4 million as one of seven grants being announced today from the CCAV and Connected and Automated Mobility programme.

The consortium, made up of world leaders in their fields HVS, Fusion Processing Ltd and ASDA, will build two prototype vehicles that will allow Level 4 autonomous-driving.

The first hydrogen-electric HGV prototype will be fitted with a driver’s cab and tested on the road in autonomous operation, using the Fusion Processing Ltd’s Automated Drive System, CAVStar, with a human safety driver at the wheel.

The second prototype will have the driver’s cab removed and replaced by an aerodynamic fairing. During the project this vehicle will be evaluated on test tracks, with the CAVStar system in this application allowing a remote human driver, located in a control hub, to operate the vehicle.

Together these two prototypes point to an optimised future logistics system where vehicles could be operated in autonomous mode on a hub-to-hub route, with a remote driver then taking control to drive the vehicle from the hub to its end destination

Arcadis Supports Roll Out of Hydrogen Network across Netherlands

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
6 Feb, 2023, 4:28 am

Leading global design and consultancy organization for natural and built assets Arcadis is working on plans for the rollout of a high-pressure hydrogen network in the Netherlands, on behalf of Gasunie subsidiary Hynetwork Services.

The announcement follows a decision by the Dutch Government in June 2022 to invest over EUR 750 million to develop a national hydrogen network across the Netherlands. This project forms an important part of plans for a national network of pipelines connecting the five major industrial areas in the Netherlands – Noord, IJmond, Rijnmond, Zeeland and Limburg - with the hydrogen storage facility in Zuidwending and neighboring countries. To roll out the network, efforts are being made to reuse existing natural gas pipelines wherever possible. It is estimated that about 85% of the hydrogen network will consist of recycled natural gas pipelines. Where this is not possible, new construction will be used.

The new infrastructure needs to be carefully integrated with the rest of the network. As part of its remit, Arcadis is investigating environmental effects and will be producing a detailed environmental impact report to help inform the decision-making process. This will include ecological and archaeological studies, as well as the consideration of other factors such as health and safety. Preparatory works are already underway, and it is anticipated that the project will take two to three years for completion.

Gascade and Fluxys step up Europe Offshore Hydrogen Plans

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
6 Feb, 2023, 4:28 am

GASCADE and Fluxys have applied to the European Commission for Project of Common Interest status for the AquaDuctus project, marking a major step forward in their plans for an offshore pipeline for green hydrogen in the North Sea. The move by the two infrastructure operators highlights the project's importance for the hydrogen ramp-up.

The offshore pipeline, which will be over 400?km long when completed, will become a linchpin of Germany's and Europe's future offshore hydrogen infrastructure. That is because the pipeline is designed as a 'backbone', able to collect hydrogen from multiple production sites while also offering the potential to link up with other international hydrogen flows through the North Sea. Hydrogen will be taken to the German coast via the offshore pipeline and fed into the onshore hydrogen network there. In this way, AquaDuctus will provide large-scale offshore hydrogen infrastructure in the German North Sea for hydrogen to be imported into Germany.

GASCADE and Fluxys have ambitious plans for this project. The first step will see the SEN-1 hydrogen wind farm connected to AquaDuctus, with flows to start in 2030. In subsequent years, wind farms further offshore in Germany's exclusive economic zone may be linked up as well as hydrogen infrastructure operated by other North Sea countries. By 2035, the offshore pipeline is to develop into a main hydrogen corridor carrying up to one million tonnes of hydrogen a year into Germany. Based on the gas and hydrogen package currently being negotiated at European level, the two long-standing transmission system operators plan the AquaDuctus offshore pipeline as a regulated open access infrastructure available to all future operators of hydrogen wind farms, thereby strengthening security of supply in the future.

A comprehensive feasibility study for the project has been successfully completed. The study examined and confirmed the technical and planning feasibility of all phases of the project. Commercial aspects, marketing potential, pricing and regulatory design options were also analysed.
