TotalEnergies Puts Green Hydrogen Deal with Adani on hold

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
13 Feb, 2023, 3:20 am

France’s leadingenergy company TotalEnergies has announced that it will postpone an agreed deal with Indian conglomerate Adani Group to invest in its green hydrogen project. A TotalEnergies spokesperson said that “Its investments in Adani’s entities were undertaken in full compliance with Indian laws and with TotalEnergies’ own internal governance processes. The due diligence, which were carried out to TotalEnergies’ satisfaction, were consistent with best practices, and all relevant material in the public domain was reviewed, including the detailed disclosures to regulators required under applicable laws.”

TotalEnergies CEO Mr Patrick Pouyanne said “Obviously, the hydrogen project will be put on hold until we have clarity. This project was announced but nothing has been signed and for now it won’t be signed. It makes no sense to add more projects until there is clarity.”

TotalEnergies is one of Adani Group’s largest foreign investors with stakes in four of its subsidiary energy companies Adani Total Private Limited, Adani Total Gas Limited, Adani Green Energy Limited and AGEL23. TotalEnergies was to take a 25% stake in the hydrogen project, in which Adani Group plans to invest USD 50 billion over 10 years into a green hydrogen ecosystem that includes an initial production capacity of one million tons before 2030.

The move follows accusations from investment research firm Hindenburg Research of a decades-long stock manipulation and accounting fraud scheme.

Toyota Trials Fuel Cell Bus on BRT Hikoboshi Line

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
13 Feb, 2023, 3:20 am

Fukuoka Prefecture, Commercial Japan Partnership Technologies Corporation and Kyushu Railway have entered an agreement to conduct trials of a small fuel cell electric bus that runs on hydrogen on the BRT Hikoboshi Line, a bus rapid transit system planned for launch around the summer of 2023. This initiative will be the first implementation of the partnership agreement between Fukuoka Prefecture and CJPT, entered into on December 26 last year, to expand commercial FC mobility and create a sustainable hydrogen society with the aim of achieving carbon neutrality. Fukuoka Prefecture and CJPT will work with JR Kyushu to hold the trials with a view to bringing FC mobility to local transportation.

The trials aim to deepen awareness of hydrogen as a future energy source by using it to operate a local transportation system familiar to residents while achieving region-wide sustainable growth. By verifying the feasibility of adopting FC mobility, the trials will increase the options for local transportation and help create a green transportation system. While bringing the use of hydrogen to local transportation, the trials will lead to the development of areas along the Hitahikosan Line BRT.

With the cooperation of communities along the line, JR Kyushu is working toward the launch of the BRT Hikoboshi Line, which is under development based on the concept of being “kind to people, communities, and the future.” Expectations are that the trials of a next-generation small FC bus will further advance efforts toward regional development as an environmentally friendly transportation option.

Going forward, Fukuoka Prefecture, CJPT, and JR Kyushu will collaborate in preparing to launch the trial runs as follows.

CLEANUP GAS

PowerTap Provides Update on Gen3 Onsite Blue Hydrogen Technology
FuelCellsWorksFebruary 13, 2023

Fuel Cells Works, PowerTap Provides Update on Gen3 Onsite Blue Hydrogen Technology
VANCOUVER, British Columbia and ALISO VIEJO, Calif. — PowerTap Hydrogen Capital Corp. (NEO: MOVE) (OTC: MOTNF) (“PowerTap” or the “Company” or “MOVE”) provides an update on the activities of PowerTap and its subsidiary, PowerTap Hydrogen Fueling Corp.

Further to the Company’s press release on November 23, 2022, PowerTap Hydrogen Fueling Corp., in conjunction with T2M Global, PowerTap’s technology partner, have further progressed the engineering and supply chain validation of the PowerTap Gen3 Modular Hydrogen Production and Dispensing Unit (MHPDU) in PowerTap’s plan to establish light-duty and heavy-duty fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) hydrogen (H2) refueling stations by 2024. As part of T2M Global’s progress on supply chain and technology validation of PowerTap’s Gen3 unit, T2M has made significant advancement towards finalizing a compression partnership that would substantially improve station uptimes over the current unacceptable 40% to 65% uptimes of existing H2 fuel stations (using H2 produced offsite) in California. T2M and the compression partner are finalizing the details to provide near 100% uptimes to enhance the H2 FCEV ownership experience. In addition, T2M has played in critical role in supporting corporate development in which PowerTap has been engaged with potential industry partners including possible station partners, vehicle OEMs, industry consortium partnerships and for government funding, both in the USA and internationally.

As announced in the Company’s press release on February 8, 2023, PowerTap appointed Mr. Salim Rahemtulla, previously President of the USA subsidiary, PowerTap Hydrogen Fueling Corp. (“USA subsidiary”), as new CEO of the USA subsidiary. Mr. Rahemtulla commented on the importance of PowerTap’s Gen3 onsite blue hydrogen technology, “As incoming CEO of the USA subsidiary, I am focused on communicating to the market the importance of PowerTap’s patented on-site blue hydrogen (H2) production solution from a cost, carbon intensity, technology, and reliability standpoint. What differentiates us from the traditional Compress-Store-Dispense (CSD) stations (i.e., the way that most all H2 fueling stations are set globally – off-site production of H2, shipping of H2 in tankers to stations and onsite storage and dispensing) is that, first and foremost, we avoid H2 transport costs which also significantly decrease carbon intensity (CI) and increase the reliability of H2 supply which will lead to needed lower prices at the pump for FCEV customers. Secondly, with our renewable natural gas (RNG) feedstock (low to negative CI biogas or biomethane coming from dairy farms, cow and pig farms, food waste, landfills, etc.), we produce carbon neutral or negative carbon H2, which is critical to our participation in the State of California’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) program. The USA subsidiary’s participation in the LCFS program (if it qualifies) will bring us significant revenue for 15 years based on our 1,250-kg H2 per day capacity, even without sales of H2 from dispensing. Thirdly, we believe that PowerTap’s Gen3 solution will deliver the lowest cost hydrogen available in California. With current retail hydrogen pricing in California ranging up to $27.50 per kg at the pump, from under $20/kg in 2020, prices are too high for H2 vehicle adoption and puts PowerTap in an excellent position to build market share in the market. PowerTap believes that in addition to being able to produce H2 at the lowest cost in California, our hydrogen production method is superior to green hydrogen (using electrolysis) produced in California using electricity from the electricity grid, due to a lack of a green electricity grid across most of the USA and high electricity costs.” Mr. Rahemtulla further commented that, “I am thrilled to take this position and lead PowerTap to create significant value for all our stakeholders, while playing a large part in decarbonizing our environment!”

Gasunie to Develop Hydrogen Network in German North Sea

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
14 Feb, 2023, 3:30 am

Gasunie intends to realise a hydrogen network in the German part of the North Sea. This German hydrogen network plays an important role in the large-scale import of hydrogen from Norway and the increasing supply of green hydrogen from future wind farms in the North Sea. The German offshore network will be connected to the Dutch offshore network, providing cross border options to import and eventually even export hydrogen through the Dutch offshore network. To develop the offshore hydrogen network, the company has now applied to the European Commission for Project of Common Interest status.

Gasunie's application is part of the international Clean Hydrogen for Europe partnership working together to realise the entire hydrogen chain, from production, transport and storage to connecting end-users in north-western Europe. In addition to Gasunie, companies from Germany, Belgium, France and Norway have contributed their PCI projects to the partnership. The aim is to commission the hydrogen network in the German North Sea from 2030. The connection to the Netherlands will follow in subsequent years.

In 2022, the Netherlands, Denmark, Germany and Belgium signed the Esbjerg Declaration, in which they agreed to develop the North Sea as a 'green power plant'. Besides the electrical energy that will be massively transported to land, a significant part of wind energy will already be converted into hydrogen at sea, which will be brought ashore from the North Sea via international hydrogen connections. Network operators and governments from different countries are working together as much as possible to realise the green power plant.

Universal Hydrogen Gets FAA Nod & Tests Hydrogen Taxi Dash 8

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
14 Feb, 2023, 3:50 am

Universal Hydrogen was granted a special airworthiness certificate in the experimental category by the Federal Aviation Administration to proceed with the first flight of its hydrogen-powered regional aircraft. The company also released video footage of successful first taxi tests of the aircraft, designed to evaluate ground handling qualities and the performance of the fuel-cell electric powertrain at low power settings and airspeeds.

The Dash 8-300 flying testbed has a megawatt-class hydrogen fuel cell powertrain installed in one of its nacelles. The powertrain is in a configuration that closely resembles the company’s first product—a conversion kit for ATR 72-600 regional airliners—which is expected to be certified and in commercial passenger service starting in 2025. Notably, Universal Hydrogen’s powertrain does not utilize hybrid battery architecture—a major innovation—with all of the power transmitted directly from the fuel cells to the electric motor, significantly decreasing weight and lifecycle cost.

The FAA approval clears the way for the first flight of the Dash 8-300 flying testbed which will take place at Grant County International Airport in Moses Lake, Washington. The aircraft will be by far the largest hydrogen fuel cell-powered airplane to take to the skies, and second as a hydrogen-powered aircraft only to the Soviet flight test in 1988 of a Tupolev Tu-155 airliner with one of its jet engines converted to burn hydrogen.

Universal Hydrogen unveiled in December 2022 first operational tests of its modular hydrogen delivery system at its engineering center in Toulouse, France. Those tests demonstrated a pragmatic, near-term, and highly scalable approach to hydrogen delivery to airports and into the aircraft using a modular capsule technology. This eliminates the need for costly new infrastructure, with any airport capable of handling cargo being hydrogen-ready. It also eliminates transfer losses and significantly speeds up hydrogen fueling operations—both significant pain points for the zero-emissions fuel.

SunHydrogen Unveils Nanoparticle-Based Green Hydrogen Generator

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
15 Feb, 2023, 4:04 am

Developer of a breakthrough technology to produce renewable hydrogen using sunlight and water SunHydrogen has published a photo of the largest version to date of its nanoparticle-based green hydrogen technology. The image shows a panel that houses multiple hydrogen generators and contains 16 times more hydrogen generator area than the Company’s previous small-scale model. Multiple arrays of hydrogen generators bolster hydrogen production rates.

This prototype is currently the only self-contained nanoparticle-based hydrogen generation device of its kind that splits water molecules into high-purity green hydrogen and oxygen using the sun’s energy.

SunHydrogen’s nanoparticle technology directly uses the electrical charges created by sunlight to generate hydrogen when the sun is shining. However, this prototype was also designed to support 24-hour operation even when the sun is not shining by powering the catalyst and membrane integration assembly with renewable grid electricity from wind or hydropower sources.

The Company’s previous small-scale model, publicized in December 2022, was designed to fit a single nanoparticle-based hydrogen generator for testing in a controlled environment.
