Trump vertrouwt op deal met China - media

(ABM FN-Dow Jones)De Amerikaanse president Donald Trump is overtuigd dat hij een handelsakkoord zal sluiten met China. Dit zei hij voor het Witte Huis tegen de pers.

"Het [de onderhandelingen] gaat heel goed met China. Zij hebben problemen met hun economie vanwege de importheffingen", tekende AFP op uit de mond van Trump.

"China wil onderhandelen. Ik heb een zeer goede relatie met president Xi [Jinping]. Ik denk dat we een deal met ze kunnen sluiten", vervolgde Trump volgens het persbureau.

Volgens de president staat de Amerikaanse economie er goed voor.

De export en import van China bleken in december onder druk te hebben gestaan, aldus cijfers vanochtend vroeg. En dat is "slecht voor het sentiment op de financiële markten", aldus marktanalist Stefan Koopman van Rabobank.

Gerekend in dollars nam de Chinese export in december met 4,4 procent af, terwijl een maand eerder nog een stijging van ruim 5 procent werd gemeld. Economen hadden voor december een toename van 2,5 procent voorzien.

De import daalde in dollars zelfs met 7,6 procent. Dat was een maand eerder nog een toename van 3,0 procent. Economen rekenden op een importstijging in december van 3,0 procent. Hierdoor steeg het Chinese handelsoverschot van 44,8 miljard naar 57,1 miljard dollar, flink meer dan de 53 miljard dollar waarop economen hadden gerekend.

In heel 2018 had China een handelsoverschot met de Verenigde Staten ter waarde van een recordbedrag van 323 miljard dollar. De export nam met 11,3 procent toe tot 478 miljard dollar, maar daalde in december, aldus de Chinese cijfers. De import uit de VS nam in 2018 slechts met 0,7 procent toe.

Koopman wees op de Australische dollar, die onder druk staat, en de vlucht naar 'safe haven' de Japanse yen.

"China begint de pijn van de handelsoorlog te voelen", aldus Koopman.

De analist van Rabobank denkt dat dit ertoe leiden dat China bereid is "wat kleine knievallen" richting de VS te doen, maar dat het nog te vroeg dag is voor Beijing om over te gaan tot een grote knieval.

De Amerikaanse president Donald Trump zal zich door deze cijfers juist gesterkt zien, vermoedt Rabobank.

De Amerikaanse president Donald Trump heeft op Twitter een nieuwe aanval gedaan op topman Jeff Bezos van webwinkel Amazon.

Trump reageerde met een tweet op het nieuws dat Bezos en zijn vrouw gaan scheiden. Hij noemde Bezos “Jeff Bozo”. Voor wie het nog niet wist: “Bozo” betekent zoveel als “stommeling” of “sukkel”. Tegen journalisten zei Trump eerder dat de scheidingsprocedure “geweldig” zou zijn.

In zijn tweet lijkt Trump te verwijzen naar berichtgeving van het roddelblad National Enquirer, dat foto’s publiceerde van Bezos met de voormalige tv-presentatrice Lauren Sanchez. Naar verluidt hebben Bezos en Sanchez een relatie. Ook beschikt de Enquirer over berichten die Bezos naar Sanchez stuurde.

The Enquirer is sinds jaar en dag een fervent aanhanger van Trump. De uitgever gaf in december toe de rechten te hebben gekocht van een verhaal van voormalig playmate Karen McDougal. McDougal claimt een affaire te hebben gehad met Trump.
The Enquirer zou het verhaal hebben gekocht om te voorkomen dat het tegen Trump wordt gebruikt: een zogeheten “catch and kill” deal.

Trump op zijn beurt staat sinds jaar en dag op gespannen voet met Bezos, de man die de legendarische krant The Washington Post kocht. The Washington Post publiceert regelmatig kritische verhalen over Trump.

Afgelopen week nog publiceerde The Post een artikel waarin staat dat Trump geheimzinnig doet over zijn ontmoeting met de Russische president Vladimir Poetin van afgelopen jaar. Hij zou details van het gesprek niet willen delen met stafleden van het Witte Huis.

Trump belde afgelopen zaterdag met Fox News om de strekking van het artikel te weerleggen. Tegen Fox zei hij: “Ik verberg niets, het kan me niets schelen”.

Trump Trade War – China fight gives Trump another way to boost steel

CNN reported that while American businesses from giants like Apple to small craft beer producers are suffering from the effects of Trump's trade war with China and the ongoing government shutdown, US steel producers are riding high on administration policies. American producers got a boost from the 25% tariff that Trump imposed on foreign steel in March. Demand rose as imports fell, allowing US companies to raise prices and increase hiring. The industry has added about 11,700 jobs since Trump took office. That resulted in bigger profits for US producers like Nucor, which just this week announced that it would invest nearly USD 1.4 billion to open a new mill in the Midwest.

Mr Thomas Gibson CEO of American Iron and Steel Institute said that "The tariffs helped and the economy was strong. Those two things together made for a better year.”

Now Trump is even promising to build his wall along the US-Mexico border out of steel, instead of concrete.

He said that "If I build a wall and the wall is made out of steel instead of concrete I think people will like that ... I'll have it done by companies in our country that are now powerful great companies again.”

The Trump administration has argued that the weakening steel industry was a threat to national security and it needed protection. An increase in production in China led to a global oversupply and has hurt the American industry.

Mr Trump expanded the steel tariff reach in June, including imports from allies like Canada, the European Union, and Mexico which had received an initial reprieve. He also put a 10% tariff on aluminum imports.

But the number of workers employed by the steel industry remains below its peak. Gibson said
the industry hasn't fully recovered from the Great Recession.

While prices have come back down after a spike when tariffs were introduced, the market shifts have hurt some American companies that buy the metal and manufacture it into something else. Dozens of industry groups have urged the administration to lift the tariffs, including the US Chamber of Commerce.

Companies have submitted more than 44,000 requests to the government, seeking to exclude certain products from the tariff list. Requests are granted if it's determined that the item is not produced domestically, meaning that the business would have to import it from elsewhere.

Manufacturers making items ranging from household goods to machinery say Trump's tariffs are hurting their bottom lines. Automakers, for example, have said the tariff has driven up the cost of production in the United States by $400 per vehicle.

The duty is exacting real harm on businesses that make products like nails, in which a big component is steel. Mid Continent Nail, the country's largest nail manufacturer, has said it is clinging to life and was forced to lay off 150 of its 500 employees after the tariff was imposed.

Trump taps former coal lobbyist Mr Andrew Wheeler to lead EPA

AFP reported that US President Donald Trump formally nominated Mr Andrew Wheeler, a former coal industry lobbyist, to lead the Environmental Protection Agency. The nomination of Mr Wheeler, who is currently the acting EPA chief, requires Senate confirmation. Mr Wheeler, 54, has been the interim agency administrator since Scott Pruitt resigned in July amid a flurry of ethics scandals, including over excessive spending of federal funds while in office. If confirmed, Wheeler is expected to pursue Trump's agenda of rolling back environmental regulations put in place by the Republican leader's predecessor Barack Obama.

Among the measures taken under Trump are the scrapping of anti-pollution rules for coal-fired power plants and the launch of a procedure to soften emissions standards for cars after 2025.

That makes Wheeler a popular choice for the energy industry itself -- and a disastrous candidate for environmental activists.

The Sierra Club, a top environmental defense group, said in November that "Putting a coal lobbyist like Andrew Wheeler in charge of the EPA is like giving a thief the keys to a bank vault. He should be swiftly rejected by any senator who cares about protecting the health of their constituents."

In November, Trump had vowed to push Wheeler's nomination forward, saying he was doing a "fantastic job" as acting EPA chief.

The EPA is also looking to roll back clean water rules protecting the nation's waterways and wetlands, fulfilling a pledge from Trump to farmers.

The agency has also proposed looser restrictions on mercury and other toxic air pollutants from power plants.

All of these measures will take years to implement. Deregulation is just as time-consuming as instituting regulations. And some of the EPA proposals have been met with court action designed to block them.

Quinnipiac poll:

American voters support 63 - 30 percent a Democratic proposal to reopen parts of the government that do not involve border security while negotiating funding for the Wall, according to a Quinnipiac University National Poll released today. Every party, gender, education, age and racial group supports this idea except Republicans, who are opposed 52 - 39 percent.

Voters oppose 63 - 32 percent shutting down the government to force funding for the Wall, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University National Poll finds. Again, Republicans are the only listed group supporting the shutdown, 67 - 24 percent.

The GOP is losing the battle as 56 percent of American voters say President Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress are responsible for the shutdown, while 36 percent say Democrats are responsible.

Voters remain solidly opposed to a wall on the Mexican border, 55 - 43 percent, and reject every argument for the Wall. The 55 - 43 percent opposition compares to 54 - 43 percent opposition in a December 18 survey, just before the partial government shutdown.

American voters are negative in every question about the wall, saying:
59 - 40 percent that it is not a good use of taxpayer dollars;
55 - 43 percent that the wall would not make the U.S. safer;
59 - 40 percent that the wall is not necessary to protect the border;
52 percent say the wall is against American values as 41 percent say the wall is consistent with American values.

Only 2 percent of voters say the TV address changed their mind, while 89 percent say it did not change their mind about building the Wall.

Voters disapprove 65 - 32 percent of President Trump using emergency executive powers to fund the Wall.

By a narrow 49 - 44 percent American voters trust Democrats in Congress more than Trump on the issue of border security.

Voters say 63 - 29 percent that undocumented immigrants are not more likely than American citizens to commit crimes.

American voters say 73 - 16 percent, including 57 - 28 percent among Republicans, that immigration is good for the country.

Daarna wilde China dit herstellen, onder voorwaarde een spoorlijn aan te leggen, door Maleisie heen om hun OBOR(One Belt OneRoad) project te realiseren. OBOR : China wil de oude zijde oude via infrastructurele projecten opzetten.

Er is in het 1mdb schandaal met grote geldbedragen geschoven.

GDANSK - Na de moord op de geliefde burgemeester Pawel Adamowicz die maandag overleed, heerst grote verslagenheid in de havenstad Gdansk en de rest van Polen. „De mensen zijn in shock”, slikt documentairemaakster Anja Mydlarska. „Haat en verdeeldheid zijn verantwoordelijk voor de moord”, oordelen vele stadgenoten die vereend in hun verdriet de straat op gingen.

Pawel Adamowicz (54) werd zondagavond bruut door een ex-bankrover neergestoken, terwijl de partijloze politicus donaties inzamelde voor zieke kinderen en ouderen. De inzamelingsactie was een groot succes, er werd dik 21 miljoen euro opgehaald.

Maandagavond kwamen duizenden rouwenden bijeen in Gdansk. Om vijf uur was er een kerkdienst, waarna om zes uur het gedicht ’Haat’ van Wislawa Szymborska werd voorgedragen. Daarin schrijft de Nobelprijswinnares: „Haat is de meester van de tegenstellingen - tussen explosies en dodelijke stilte, rood bloed en witte sneeuw.”

De moordenaar van Adamowicz stak hem voor de ogen van honderden toeschouwers neer, omdat hij dacht dat de burgemeester lid was van de liberale oppositiepartij PO. De dader liet zich eenvoudig arresteren. Over zijn motief zei de voormalige bankrover dat de PO hem in de gevangenis had gesmeten. Een onjuiste redenering, want Adamowicz was zoals gezegd partijloos en bovendien werd de moordenaar door de rechter tot vijf jaar cel veroordeeld, niet door politici.

Nep-overlijdensadvertentie

Op internet werd Adamowicz al jaren gedemoniseerd. Zo circuleerden er pamfletten en posters van groepen als de extreemrechtse Mlodziez Wszechpolska’, de Groot-Poolse Jeugd. Deze nationalistische organisatie publiceerde in 2017 onder meer een overlijdensadvertentie van Adamowicz: De doodsoorzaken volgens de poster: „Liberalisme, multiculturalisme, domheid.”

„Ik walg van de filmpjes van de publieke omroep TVP tegen de inzamelingsactie voor zieke kinderen”, zegt Magdalena Pramfelt, jarenlang de Nederlandse consul in Gdansk. De propagandazender van de Poolse regering zendt al jarenlang haat tegen en onwaarheden over de oppositie uit.

Adamowicz was een tegenstander van de autoritaire regering in Warschau. Hij zette zich met ziel en zaligheid in voor Gdansk, de stad waar in de jaren ’80 de anticommunistische arbeidersbeweging Solidariteit ontstond.

„In onze stad van de vrijheid hebben we geen werkloosheid”, legt Magdalena Pramfelt uit. „Dat is ook de verdienste van Pawel Adamowicz. Ik zag hem vijf dagen geleden nog op een receptie voor investeerders.”

Adamowicz laat een vrouw en twee dochters achter.
