Near Izyum, 2x Russian 152mm 2S3 Akatsiya self-propelled howitzers were struck by Ukrainian counter-battery fire, destroying them both when the ammo on board detonated.

As claimed, Western supplied "high precision" artillery was used, and as can be seen, was effective.

Getting high-precision artillery is one thing; knowing how to use it quite another. And Ukrainians are clearly demonstrating they know how to use it.

Military layman ( leek op militair gebied hier ) here ... What exactly is high-prec ammunition and why is it different to use than the normal ammo?

The shell is either gps or laser guided. Much more expensive.

However only makes a difference in accuracy for say > 15km since standard shells are as accurate up to that distance.

Thanks, David! So if it has GPS it means it also has some kind of steering mechanism, right? But no propulsion? Because otherwise what'd be the difference versus a missile?

Yes. Pop out fins. Also sometimes with a booster rocket for extra range.

Pentagon press secretary John Kirby says weapons are getting through to Ukraine

Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby says despite Russia ramping up its attacks across Ukraine the weapons allies are filtering into the country “are getting into Ukrainian hands.”

“They are attempting to hit what we assessed to be critical infrastructure targets out towards the west, electrical power, transportation hubs, that kind of thing,” said Kirby.

“We think this is an effort to try to disrupt the Ukrainians ability to replenish and reinforce themselves.”

A declaration of all-out war would allow Putin to introduce martial law and mobilize reservists to make up for significant troop losses.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed the speculation as “nonsense.”

Weaponry pouring into Ukraine helped its forces thwart Russia’s initial drive to seize Kyiv and seems certain to play a central role in the growing battle for the Donbas, the eastern industrial region that Moscow now says is its main objective.

Ukraine has urged the West to ramp up the supply of weapons ahead of that potentially decisive clash.

Kirby also spoke about North Korea launching a ballistic missile toward its eastern waters on Wednesday.

This comes days after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un vowed to speed up the development of his nuclear weapons “at the fastest possible pace” and threatened to use them against rivals.

The launch, the North’s 14th round of weapons firing this year, also came six days before a new conservative South Korean president takes office for a single five-year term.

Ukrainian Professor Turned Soldier Still Lectures Students From Battlefield

Teaching is a large part of the life of Fedir Sandor, so much so that the Ukrainian professor continues to provide lectures to his students while on the battlefield fighting for his country against Russia.

Sandor is a professor at Uzhhorod National University, where, according to the school's website, he is a doctor of philosophy and is the head of the department of sociology and social work.

A picture of him dressed in fatigues and donning a rifle has circulated online on platforms including Twitter, Reddit and Facebook, not just because he is a teacher defending his homeland but also because he is giving his students a virtual lecture while holed up in a bunker.

People cited his dedication to the teaching craft, such as one internet user saying "both the university and country are blessed to have him."

"This is why Ukraine will win," another said.

"I see this man as a hero not only today, but for the future of the young students who will forever remember him for what he does," said another Twitter user who identified himself as a Danish citizen.

Google Scholar shows that Sandor's work, such as "Gender and modern society" and "Subject-subject relations in social work and biopsychosocial approach to human understanding," has been cited in 525 research papers, including 347 studies since 2017 alone.

His university said Thursday that on the first day of the war with Russia, Fedor enlisted to serve in Ukraine's Terror Defense Battalion. He is reportedly now fighting in an unspecified exact location in the country's eastern region.

He has maintained a consistent schedule involving lectures at 8 a.m. every Monday and Tuesday. Upon enlistment, he reached an agreement with his command unit, as well as his fellow serving countrymen, to be able to both fight and teach.

’Russische wereldkampioen gevechtstank-biatlon sterft in tank Oekraïne’

Kiev - De Russische wereldkampioen van een wedstrijd voor gevechtstanks is overleden toen hij met in zijn tank werd geraakt tijdens de Russische invasie van Oekraïne. De man, Bato Basanov, zat in een recordbrekend tankbiatlonteam dat al verschillende tankwedstrijden had gewonnen, dat meldt de Daily Mail.

Een tankbiatlon is een militaire wedstrijd waarin bemanningen van een tank laten zien hoe nauwkeurig en snel ze kunnen schieten tijdens het uitvoeren van manoeuvres. Putin's Soldiers Feel Disposable, Want to Leave Ukraine War

Russian soldiers fighting the war in Ukraine feel disposable and some have been considering wounding themselves in order to leave the conflict, according to calls and messages Ukraine said it intercepted from Russian troops and commanders.

In the calls, which were translated and posted on the the Security Service of Ukraine's (SSU) website and viewed by Newsweek, Russian soldiers have allegedly referred to themselves as "cannon fodder" and compared their situation in Ukraine to "hell." Russia has not publicly addressed the SSU reports.

The alleged discontent among Russian soldiers, as demonstrated in the intercepted calls, comes amid swirling concerns that Russian President Vladimir Putin could officially declare war on Ukraine, even though Russian officials have denied those rumors since the invasion began in late February.

A U.S. Defense Department official said Monday that morale among Russian troops has been deteriorating, while Ukraine and NATO have estimated that Russian military losses have been heavy, highlighting circumstances that might lead to low spirits among the soldiers in Ukraine.

In one call the SSU said it intercepted, a Russian soldier told an acquaintance in Russia that certain troops refused to begin a new offensive in the Ukrainian region of Kharkiv.

"And they treat us here really tough in general, almost to the point of execution," the soldier said. "We want to leave, but they don't let us."

When asked why they refused, the soldier said: "Well, they send us directly to the front line, to real hell. There we're cannon fodder...There is just the artillery...and to go under the artillery fire—it's a f***ing suicide."

Another call the SSU said it intercepted in the Kherson region included a conversation between a Russian battalion commander and a company commander who arrived with reinforcements from the self-declared Donetsk People's Republic (DNR). In the call, the DNR commander described how Russian soldiers refused to go on an offensive and encouraged the newly arrived reinforcements to do the same, according to the SSU.

"This morning the Russians refused, saying, 'Why are you going? You are 'meat'!'...They refused, went the other way and said, 'Are you f***ing idiots? Where the hell are you going?', and then the panic started," the DNR commander said.

A Russian commander of a regiment fighting near Izium in the Kharkiv region said in reportedly intercepted text messages that he tried shooting some of his "completely demoralized" soldiers after failing to "get them up morally or physically."

"I even shoot some. And to no avail," he said.

Conversations in additional calls intercepted by the SSU suggest that Russia's dead and wounded don't fare much better. The SSU reported that a Russian prisoner of war said that he and a wounded soldier were abandoned on a battlefield by a commander during a retreat.

"They said they would pick us up, but they never did," the captured soldier said. "So many boys were left wounded, killed...."

The SSU also reported, citing another call, that Russian soldiers killed in the conflict are transported back to Russia in caravans, sometimes arriving partially decomposed and in need of identification by their relatives.

The desire to leave Ukraine, or at least temporarily evade the conflict, is so intense among some Russian soldiers that they are considering wounding themselves, according to conversations in other calls the SSU said it intercepted.

"I'll tell you this in confidence...we wanted to shoot each other's legs with Ukrainian 7.62 rounds and go back to the hospital here in [Budyonnovsk]," a soldier told his mother in one call.

In another, a Russian soldier allegedly discussed with his girlfriend whether he should "hammer" a shrapnel fragment into his leg so that he can return to Russia.

In response, the soldier's girlfriend suggested he shoot himself in the leg instead, but the soldier later concluded that a self-inflicted wound would not work, Newsweek reported.

Russian attacks on farms and silos ‘deliberately trying to destroy the Ukrainian economy’

Videos shared online and eyewitness accounts attest to an emerging Russian offensive tactic in Ukraine: the deliberate targeting of agricultural equipment, farms and grain supplies through shelling and looting. The attacks on Ukraine, known as “the breadbasket of Europe”, have been precise enough to constitute “very deliberate attempts by Russia to curtail Ukraine’s agricultural production”, according to a food security expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

Ukraine’s agricultural activities have already been severely interrupted since the Russian offensive in the country began on February 24. Last year, Ukraine harvested 106 million tonnes of grain, a record for the country. But Ukraine’s agriculture minister lamented that up to half of Ukraine’s harvest could be lost due to the various impacts of the war this year.

On top of this, Ukraine’s farms and grain storage facilities appear to have been directly targeted by the Russian military in attacks and operations.

Russian Soldiers in Ukraine Rebel Against Their Generals

Some Russian soldiers in Ukraine have been rebelling against their generals, or teetering on the edge of rebellion and taking active steps aimed at halting the offensive, according to calls Ukraine says it has intercepted from Russian troops and commanders.

The supposed brewing rebellions among Russian soldiers in recent weeks highlight reports that the nation's troops are suffering from low morale. Additionally, while different groups and leaders have reported varying numbers of Russian troop losses, some counts claim more than 20,000 Russian soldiers have been killed. NATO estimated in late April up to 15,000 Russian troops had been killed.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) frequently shares findings from the purportedly intercepted calls on its website, many of which demonstrate discontent and poor treatment of troops from the Russian command. Russia has not publicly confirmed the content of any of the alleged intercepted calls.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said during an address Saturday that Russia has lost more than 23,000 soldiers in the conflict.

"The Russian command is well aware that thousands more Russian soldiers will be killed and thousands more will be wounded in the coming weeks," he added.

Coupled with what a Defense Department official described on Monday as "minimal" progress in Donbas more than two months into the war and indications that Russian forces have a risk and casualty aversion, the circumstances many Russian troops are experiencing may not facilitate high spirits.
